Fee calculation, assumptions & sources
Fuel-only example

This calculator shares one car’s fuel bill across all occupants and adds the proposed rider service fee. It does not model other vehicle expenses. Equal fuel sharing is our example, not a legally prescribed split. Read the B.C. regulation ↗

The driver receives C$2.88 from all riders together towards the car’s C$5.76 fuel bill. The platform fee does not increase the driver’s reimbursement.

The driver’s estimated monthly saving is C$34.56. The driver covers any remainder cents from splitting fuel.

Proposed service fee: C$0.79 + 8% of the driver contribution, capped at C$1.49 per one-way leg. For this example, each rider’s C$2.88 return-trip contribution is divided into two legs, with any odd cent assigned to the return leg. Each leg’s fee is rounded to the nearest cent and capped separately. The two fees total C$1.82, making the rider’s total C$4.70 before applicable taxes.

The service fee goes to poollooper, separately from the driver’s reimbursement. Drivers pay no platform fee. Weekly billing is proposed for completed rides and any charges under an agreed cancellation policy. Contributions, fees, applicable tax and total would be shown before acceptance. Registration does not authorize a payment. Final pricing and paid launch depend on the required approvals.

One month = 4 weeks. One return trip uses return km × 0.08 litres, priced at your selected C$1.80/L. Passenger count changes the fuel split, not the car’s fuel bill.

Fuel is divided by all occupants, including the driver. Each rider’s share is rounded down to whole cents; the driver covers the remainder. Total rider reimbursement is the per-rider fuel share × number of riders and never exceeds the modelled fuel bill.

Rider monthly savings = (solo fuel cost − rider fuel contribution − proposed service fee for both legs) × shared days/week × 4. Driver savings exclude the rider service fee. Driving alone assumes the same gasoline use for everyone. Riders who would otherwise use transit, walk or cycle may save less or nothing. When fees outweigh the saving, the result shows an extra monthly cost.

Group fuel avoided = return km × 0.08 × shared days/week × 4 × (occupants − 1). Tailpipe CO₂ avoided = litres avoided × 2.3 kg. Fewer solo return trips = shared days/week × 4 × (occupants − 1). Unlike the single car’s cost, these group comparisons grow when more solo cars are replaced.

Excluded: parking, applicable taxes, detours, differences between vehicles, added passenger load, insurance, maintenance, depreciation, and upstream or vehicle manufacturing emissions. The proposed platform fee is included. These gasoline examples do not estimate EV costs or emissions.

B.C. Passenger Transportation Regulation, sections 1(1), 1(2) and 5(g) ↗: the ordinary carpool exemption has route, use and vehicle conditions as well as a cost-recovery limit. This calculator alone cannot establish legal or insurance compliance. Confirm the pilot’s payment arrangements with the Commercial Passenger Vehicle Program and an Autoplan broker before paid rides begin.

Natural Resources Canada, 2023 Fuel Consumption Guide ↗ supplies the 2.3 kg CO₂/litre factor. Calculations by poollooper; example assumptions reviewed October 23, 2026.

ILLUSTRATIVE SCENARIO

20 people.
10 cars, together.

If 20 people who would each drive alone pair up for the same trip, they would need just 10 cars. That’s 10 fewer cars competing for road space — and 10 fewer parking spaces at the destination.

Illustrative scenario, not measured pilot results or a forecast of travel-time improvement. Assumes everyone would otherwise drive alone; routes, participation and detours affect outcomes.

FAMILIAR ROUTES. A FRESH START.

Good company is
closer than you think.

Planned trips. Shared costs.
Built around the commute you already make.

  1. 01

    Share your usual week.

Add your route and role to the free interest list. Optional workdays and outbound and return windows help us see where commutes overlap.

  2. 02

    Build a familiar group.

The first pilot would focus on one corridor and workplace cluster. Small groups would agree meeting points and choose compatible travel companions before riding.

  3. 03

    Plan there and back.

Before rides begin, the plan is to confirm both legs, agree how schedule changes are handled and show all costs. Weekly confirmations and cancellation alerts are planned; no ride home is guaranteed.

REQUIRED BEFORE RIDES

A plan when plans change.

Reporting, blocking, incident response and support arrangements must be ready. A backup journey option is being explored; no guaranteed ride home is currently offered.

How the proposed cost-sharing model stays focused
  • Drivers share journeys they already intend to make and choose compatible passengers.
  • One planned return passenger trip per driver per day is the proposed pilot limit.
  • Contributions across all riders are limited to attributable eligible costs. No driver profit, surge pricing or paid cruising is proposed.
  • The calculator uses fuel only for driver reimbursement. Parking is excluded from this calculator.
  • poollooper’s proposed fee is shown separately. Its regulatory treatment, insurance and payment arrangements still need confirmation.

These are proposed operating rules, not a statement of regulatory approval or insurance coverage.

FOR EMPLOYERS & CAMPUSES

One workplace.
A shared direction.

Help your team build a regular carpool. The proposed first pilot starts with one workplace cluster, one corridor and a shared departure window.

  • A focused first group

Recruit drivers already making the journey, then find riders with compatible days and both travel windows.

  • Support the daily routine

Explore familiar commute groups, weekly schedule confirmations and employer-funded access. These features and funding arrangements are planned.

  • Measure participation

Proposed reporting would distinguish interest, completed shared journeys and modelled impact. No participant data is shared with employers through this form.

Proposed workplace pilot support: C$1,500–C$3,000/month, with scope, deliverables and applicable taxes agreed in advance. This is an inquiry, not an offer to purchase or a funding commitment.

Optional work-email verification, private groups and reporting are planned. Joining a workplace group would not publish an employee’s home address or schedule. No employer or municipal partnership is implied.

BEFORE WE SET OFF

A few good questions.

Here’s where the pilot stands.

Am I signing up for a ride today?

You’re expressing interest in the West Shore, Sooke and Victoria pilot. Routes, onboarding and launch timing are still being shaped. Broad route and optional schedule details help us understand demand. We’ll only use your signup email to notify you when we launch. A signup doesn’t reserve or guarantee a ride, authorize a payment, or start a paid subscription.

Do I need a car to take part?

No. We need both drivers with spare seats and neighbours looking for a ride. Choose driving, riding, or either when you register. Drivers would only offer trips they already plan to make.

Is poollooper free? What are the proposed ride fees?

Joining the interest list is free. The planned service charges riders per ride, with no rider membership subscription. The proposed service fee is C$0.79 + 8% of the driver contribution, capped at C$1.49 per one-way leg, added to the rider’s contribution to the driver. A return trip has two legs, so the service fee is capped at C$2.98 per rider for both legs, before applicable taxes.

For example, a C$4.00 driver contribution for one leg gives a C$1.11 service fee and a C$5.11 rider total before applicable tax. We’ll show the contribution, service fee, applicable tax and total separately before you accept.

These are proposed launch prices in Canadian dollars. Final pricing and paid rides depend on regulatory, insurance and payment clearance. Registering now does not commit you to pay.

Do drivers pay a fee?

No platform fee is proposed for drivers. The rider pays poollooper’s service fee separately, so it is not deducted from the driver’s reimbursement. Driver contributions cover approved trip costs; the platform fee is poollooper’s revenue.

When would I be charged?

The planned service bundles completed rides and any rides chargeable under the agreed cancellation policy into one weekly payment. Booking several weeks or a calendar month would still be billed weekly, not as a membership subscription. The price and cancellation terms will be shown before you accept. No payment is collected through this interest form.

Does the savings calculator include the service fee?

Yes. It adds the proposed fee for both legs to each rider’s illustrative fuel-only contribution. Parking is not reimbursed by riders and does not increase the fee. Parking is excluded from the calculator and savings comparison. Drivers pay no platform fee. Applicable taxes are not estimated.

This is an example, not a pilot fare quote. Your actual approved contribution may differ. If the service fee outweighs the shared-cost saving, the calculator shows an extra monthly cost.

How will poollooper fund the service?

The plan combines rider service fees with employer and institutional support for workplace carpool groups, verification and operations. Proposed pilot sponsorship is C$1,500–C$3,000 per month per workplace group, negotiated with each partner. That is a partner charge, not a rider subscription.

We’re also exploring employer-funded access and a capped weekly rider fee to make repeat commuting more affordable. Neither is available or included in the calculator yet. No sponsorship, municipal partnership or funding commitment is implied.

What about safety and reliability?

Participant onboarding, driver and vehicle checks, insurance confirmation, pickup arrangements, reporting and support processes must be ready before rides begin. Registration does not verify a person or vehicle. No guaranteed ride home is currently offered. See what is available and what is planned.

Could I travel with the same group each week?

That’s the aim: a small group with compatible routes, workdays and travel windows, with room for shift changes and days off. Weekly confirmations, optional workplace verification and private workplace groups are planned. Today’s form records interest only; it does not find or reserve a match.

What if I don’t commute every weekday?

Share your interest anyway. The idea supports planned workplace trips on the days you actually travel, including shifts and occasional commutes. Matching will depend on who else is travelling your route at a similar time.
